Rufus "Pete" Powell

Rufus “Pete” Powell, 86, of Shipman, died on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.  

Pete was born May 29,1937 in Nelson County, son of John William & Bessie Mae Powell.

 He was a long-time member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.  He and his wife opened P&D Subs of Lovingston in the 1980s and retired after several years of ownership.

 He is predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (Dot), and survived by their five daughters, Teresa Bowles (Neptune NJ), Yvette Powell (Fleming Island, FL), Rochelle Davis (Tinton Falls, NJ), Dawn Powell-Reid (Monroe, NC), and Adrian Powell (Jacksonville, FL); a sister, Frances Thornton (San Diego, CA); eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. 

 A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at the Powell Cemetery located next to 8040 Laurel Road in Shipman, followed by the repast at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Elma VA.

 Flowers may be sent to Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston VA.  Donations may be sent to Ebenezer Baptist Church.
