“When our time on Earth is done, money or material things will not matter. But the love, time and kindness we’ve given others shine and live on forever.”
Marvin D'Neal Martin, 60, of Shipman, Virginia, peacefully departed this life on September 30, 2024, at his home on James River Road, entering eternal rest with his Lord.
Born on February 14, 1964, in Charlottesville, Virginia, Marvin was the third son of the late Rochelle D. Martin and Dorothy Mae Washington Martin.
Marvin’s professional journey began as a certified chef at the University of Virginia, where he served for many years. Later, he transitioned to Nelson County Public Schools, first as Lead Custodian at Nelson County High School and ultimately as the Maintenance Leader for the school system. However, his greatest joy came from coaching basketball, where he made a lasting impact. He loved the sport and was also known for his own high school success. Marvin proudly wore the number 24, a symbol that quickly became a cherished family tradition. He coached boys’ teams at the middle school, JV, and varsity levels, earning admiration not only for his coaching skills but for the guidance and care he showed his players. His love for the sport and commitment to the youth in his community made him a much-loved figure both on and off the court.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Debra Whitmore-Martin, his loving mother, Dorothy Martin, and his two brothers, Roy Lee and Gilbert, all of Shipman. His son, Mario Foster, resides in Utah. Marvin loved his family deeply and made it his mission to keep everyone laughing. He was known for his playful spirit and humor, often sharing his favorite sayings like "Who you with?" and "Let my people go." His joy and laughter were a gift to all who knew him.
Marvin was very close to his mother and brothers, as well as his aunts: Clardine Hudson, Irene Tillman, Helen Meredith, Florence Bell, Mary Vest, Sara Thompson (Charlie) and Mary Martin; and uncles: Charles Martin, Phil Martin, LeeRoy Vest and Oscar Vest. His love extended to his cousins, nieces, and nephews, with whom he shared many cherished moments. Among those were Gary Vest, Pamela Meredith Hamilton, and Marcus Terry. Marvin also had a special connection with his dynamic trio, Tre, Jamire, and D’Neal; he took immense pride in their achievements and enjoyed watching them grow. Alongside his wife, Debbie, Marvin devoted countless hours to uplifting the youth of Nelson County. Though his influence touched many lives, he always said, “Mario has my heart.”
His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
