Joseph Carmel Goodwin, Sr.

Joseph Carmel Goodwin, Sr. (“Carmel”), age 78, of Arrington, Virginia, passed peacefully Wednesday, December 6, 2023.  Born to Mildred and James Warren Goodwin, Sr. on March 3, 1945, he was the youngest of four sons.

A loving and devoted husband to his wife, Melba Dawn Goodwin, Carmel retired from his many roles at Wintergreen Resort after her passing in 2015.  He loved his family farm and spent many hours tending to his birds, garden and fruit trees to provide fresh items to family, friends and anyone in need.

In addition to his wife and parents, Carmel was preceded in death by two brothers, James Warren Goodwin, Jr. (“J.W.”) and Charles Ward Goodwin.

Carmel is survived by his children Stephanie Ann Goodwin, her companion John of Alaska, Joseph Carmel Goodwin, Jr. (“J.C.”), wife Heather of Arrington, grandchildren Logan Goodwin, Lawson Goodwin, Ledger Goodwin, Timothy Birch, Brittany Birch, Nicholas Birch, nine great-grandchildren, and one surviving brother, Robert Nelson Goodwin. In addition to those family members, he has been greatly benefited in life by his continued relationship with his wife’s family including her daughter Betty Siron and companion Chuck Lunsford who were frequent visitors in his later years.  His “best buddy” Shorty will have to do without having table food tossed to him at every meal but will continue Carmel’s afternoon nap routine while being loved and supported as he provided so much companionship to Carmel after his wife’s passing. A special thank you to Dawn’s sister, Lillian Bussey, for taking in Carmel’s best buddy Shorty.

At Carmel’s request, only a graveside service is scheduled for Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church with Pastor David Blevins officiating.  Family and friends are welcome to gather to fellowship at the Nelson United Methodist Church immediately after the service. 

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be directed to the Almost Home Pet Adoption Center located at 29 Stagebridge Road. Lovingston, Virginia  22949 or the Nelson County Food Pantry located at 9890 Thomas Nelson Highway, Lovingston, Virginia  22949.
