Joseph G. Beery

Joseph G. Beery, 99, of Dayton, Virginia passed away at his home in Dayton on Monday, October 30, 2023.

Joe as most called him was a country gentleman and was known throughout Nelson County for his leadership and service to the area during Hurricane Camille in August of 1969.

He along with a host of his fellow Mennonite members totally restored the original Sheffield Funeral Home in Lovingston and while doing so rescued the original horse drawn hearse located in the original country store and livery stable on the property.

That day the hearse was offered to be donated to the Mennonite families and on August 26, 1969 it was transported to Dayton.  After several years the family totally restored the hearse and it has been used quite often to date.

Mr. Beery’s service will be held Thursday, November 2, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at the Pleasant View Old Order Mennonite Church, 3694 Coakley Town Road, Dayton, VA and Mr. Joe will be taken for his final ride in the hearse that he was so proud of.
