John Percy Martin, III

John Percy Martin III, age 75, of Shipman, Virginia entered eternal rest on Saturday, June 10, 2023. He was our hero, a father figure in our community, a devout fan of all sports, and a family man.

John was born on June 23, 1947 in Shipman, Virginia, by way of midwife to the late Bernice and Percy Martin. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Michael Martin; sister, Rebecca Martinez; nephews, Ricky Davidson, Casey Martin, and Quention Johnson; niece, Pheobie Johnson, and a host of cousins.

Affectionately known as "Hooten", "Big John", or "Smokie", John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, sibling, uncle, and friend. He worked hard to provide for his family and was a humble man.  He stayed to himself and didn't bother a soul. He loved the lord, prayed fiercely, and was a member of Bright Hope Baptist Church in Lovingston, Virginia. He loved his wife and family. His legacy is hard work, honesty, and genuine love.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his devoted wife of 53 years, Mary Pauline Martin; three loving children, sons, Anthony William Martin, and Shawn Carlos Martin;  daughter, Kelly Elaine Martin; grandchildren, Jasmine LaShay Humbles, Merrantanee Naujea Smith, and Carlos Antonio Martin; great grandchildren, Lauren, Naomi, Jaxen,  Kingston, and Lazih; Uncle Eugene Foster Jr., Aunt Julia Brown;  brothers, Edgar (Cheryl), and Timothy (Ann) Martin;  sisters, Dale Davidson, Kathy Martin, Jackie (Ronnie) Jones, Kimberly Martin, Valerie Martin, and Karen Martin, the bookend.  He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends that loved him dearly.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston, Virginia, with Rev. Samuel Woodson officiating.  Interment will follow at Oak Hill Baptist Memorial Gardens in Massies Mill, Virginia.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
