James Alexander Wood Sr., 83, of Wingina, Va., passed away surrounded by his wife and children on December 15, 2021 after a brief illness.
Born in Wingina on November 26th, 1938, he was the last of seven children of Charles Henry Wood Sr. and Kathleen Morgan Wood. Jimmy graduated from Nelson County High School in 1956 and attended Virginia Tech and Ferrum College. He served in the United States Army between 1961 – 1964, an experience about which he had many stories.
Jimmy was a natural businessman. After his many years in the wood business, he used his intimate knowledge of the people, mountains, and farmland of Nelson County to build a twenty-year career as a successful realtor with Montague Miller & Co.
In his retirement, Jimmy loved making the rounds through Nelson County to visit with friends. He spent mornings at Cleve’s, ate lunch at Mac’s Market, and was a fixture of the Saturday morning “neighborhood watch” meetings at the Wingina Store. He drove across the James River daily just to check on things.
Jimmy enjoyed golfing, watching his grandchildren participate in various activities, telling stories, and traveling to see family in Alabama and South Carolina. While a lifelong Hokie at heart, he spent many years attending UVA football games with his friends in the Wahoo Limo.
Jimmy leaves behind his loving wife of 53 years, Barbara Pearson Wood; their children Mary W. Goad (Tinsley), Laura W. Cooper (Will), James A. Wood, Jr. (Sarah); niece Sarah W. Tolley (Darren); and nine grandchildren: Morgan, Mattie and Coleman Goad; Jack, Chloe, and Lila Cooper; and James Alexander “Alex” III, Mia and Graham Wood. Jimmy is also survived by his sisters-in law, Nancy H. Wood and Louise M. Wood. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Kathleen, and his siblings Charles, Sarah, Cliff, Maude, Bucky, and Jane.
