Harry Delmas Campbell

Harry Delmas Campbell, 86, of North Garden went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 6, 2023.

Delmas was born on July 7, 1937, to the late Plum and Viney Campbell in Nelson County, Va.

In addition to his parents Delmas was preceded in death by five brothers, Harvey Campbell, John Campbell, Tinsley Campbell, Woodrow Campbell, and Irvin Campbell; two sisters, Juanita Burnley and Betty Mitchell; a wife, Pauline Campbell and a daughter, Sandra Austin.

Delmas left school in the 9th grade with a determined mind and a hardworking back. He loved to work. His work wasn’t something he did, it was who he was. He loved to be told something couldn’t be done, just to prove that he could.  He started in the business as a young teenager logging with horses with his brothers. Then spent a short stint in the military as a paratrooper in the army that he was very proud of. He loved to say the first two times he flew he never landed, he jumped!

He started back logging again in the 50’s which lead him to his ultimate love…saw milling, as the local mills could not handle his volume of output and at that point he never looked back and continued in the lumber business growing his mills from North Garden to Appomattox, Dillwyn and Natural Bridge. Along with saw milling was his love for farming. He loved to say, “When you get sawdust in your lungs and cow manure on your boots, you can never get it off!”.

He never did anything on a small scale, he was all or nothing. He is most known and remembered for his strength and determination. He was as tough as they come. He enjoyed making others laugh, and touched the lives of many people and will be greatly missed.

His biggest accomplishment was his children and grandchildren. He was lovingly called “Pop” by all. He would correct a child, but the grandchildren could never do any wrong.

Delmas is survived by one sister, Corina "Matt" Tomlin of Amherst; ex wife, Betty Campbell of North Garden and five children, Teresa Snead (David) of Nelson, Tinsley Campbell (Christina) of Albemarle, Patty Rodgers  (Jim) of Nelson, Robi Durrer (Greg) of Amherst, and Kathy Ogden (Dale) of Albemarle; 15 grandchildren , Josh, Emily and Kayla (from daughter Sandy), Logan, Landen and Christian (from son Tinsley) Jamie, Jack, GeorgiAnna and Lia (from daughter Patty) Katie, Caroline and Lacey (from daughter Robi) and Luke, Nathan and Tiffany (from daughter Kathy) and numerous beloved nephews and nieces.
