Gladys Garnette Wheeler

Gladys Garnette Wheeler, 71, of Amherst passed away peacefully at Fairmont Crossing on Wednesday, July 27, 2022 after a long, hard fight with renal disease.
She was born on January 15, 1951, in Lynchburg, to the late Susie Anna Stevens of Nelson.
Garnette was a garment factory worker, a child care provider, a postal worker and finally a CNA at Fairmont Crossing.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Lloyd Hampton Wheeler in August 2020. Passing before her also was her brother, Gary Stevens of Nelson and recently a treasured cousin, Alma Grace Bond. Garnette is survived by a sister, Annette Ford and husband Bobby of Chatham; a brother, James Stevens and wife Joan of Ponder, Texas; sons, John Stevens and wife Tammy of Rustburg; Kevin Wheeler and wife Stacy of Amherst; grandchildren, Wade Wheeler, Cody, Matt and Katie Stevens; nieces, Dawn Crider, Diane Barker, Anna Blair, Meghan Lee, and Karen Trent; and beloved cousins, Pettis Bond of Nelson and Paula Main of Salem.
The family wishes to express gratitude to all of the healthcare workers who have provided excellent care both past and present to both Garnette and Lloyd. The ladies at Fairmont provided an extended family for Mom in her final days.
A graveside service will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery with Pastor John P. Campbell officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Amherst Wolverines Football, PO Box 1572, Amherst VA 24521.
