Gillies Prosper Rodgers

Gillies Prosper Rodgers, 70 of Shipman passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2024.

He was born August 11, 1953 in Albemarle County, Virginia at the University of Virginia Hospital, the son of the late James Marcus Rodgers and Margaret Elizabeth Brockenbrough Rodgers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Marcus “Mark” Rodgers.

Gillies is survived by his wife of 44 years, Karen Leigh King Rodgers; two sons, Thomas Austin Rodgers and wife Mallory Ann Rodgers, and Stephen Andrew Rodgers and wife Megan Virts Rodgers; one grandson, Silas Andrew Rodgers and another grandson due in May 2024; three sisters, Marjorie Snead and husband Donnie, Joyce Powell and husband Harry, and Helen Rodgers and husband William Arnstein; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Gillies graduated from Virginia Tech in 1976 with a degree in Civil Engineering Technology. After college, he began his career with Environmental Elements in Baltimore, Maryland. He traveled the country until he returned to Nelson County in October, 1979 where he became a land developer and building contractor. Gillies was a member of Rock Spring United Methodist Church and the Nelson County Homebuilders Association.

He was an avid reader and fisherman and was happiest on the water with a fishing pole in his hand. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, travelling, skiing, and playing cards. He was always willing to lend a hand to family and friends in need.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Cypress Chapel Church Cemetery, 1891 Cypress Chapel Road, Suffolk, VA 23434, with Pastor David Blevins officiating.
