Ellen Marie Herder

Ellen Marie Turner Herder was born on Monday, April 25, 1932, to the loving care of Thomas and Gladys Turner, joining siblings Mary, Laura, Herman, Robert, Linwood, and Chestine. Her siblings have all preceded her in death.

Ellen attended school in Lovingston, Virginia. She was baptized at an early age at Poplar Flat Baptist Church in Lovingston, Virginia, and served faithfully until she moved to Washington, DC.

Ellen moved to Washington, DC in the mid-1960s where she met and married Claude Calvin Herder and they had two children, Zavin Eric Herder, and Melinda Lauren Herder. Claude preceded Ellen in death, May 20 I 0.

Ellen loved cooking and caring for children, and she volunteered for the March of Dimes. She was employed at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD for twenty years, from July 1996 until she retired June 30, 2016.

Ellen was loved and cherished by so many people. She will be greatly missed by her devoted daughter and caregiver Melinda L. Herder, devoted son Zavin E. Herder, grandsons Demetrius Toyer and Paris Van Buren (Tyondra), great granddaughter Dakota Van Buren, devoted sister-in-laws Alexandria Turner and Inez Turner, and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, special friends, and neighbors. Even though Ellen is no longer with us, her love, and our precious memories of her will remain in our hearts forever.
