Edward Hampton Dodd, Sr.

Edward Hampton Dodd Sr. of Lovingston, VA peacefully passed away January 16, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. He was 99 years old.

Edward was born on June 17th, 1925 in Nellysford, VA, son of the late Claude Norrison Dodd and Mary Virginia Mawyer Dodd. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 61 years, Ruby Craig Dodd. Edward is survived by sons, Edward (Margaret) Hampton Dodd, Jr., Nelson (Deborah) Craig Dodd, Claude Robert Dodd, and Thomas Gregory Dodd; 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. 

Edward proudly served in the United States Army during World War II as a combat infantryman and machine gun squad leader, promoted to Staff Sergeant while serving in M Company, 165th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division. He saw combat on Saipan and Okinawa. He later served in Japan in a construction engineer unit. His awards included the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with 2 bronze service stars, World War II Victory Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was recalled to active duty for the Korean War and was stationed in Nuremberg, Germany as a Squad Leader in M Company, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division receiving the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany).

He was an avid sports fan, His favorite baseball team was the New York Yankees and his favorite football team was the Dallas Cowboys. He enjoyed playing sports including baseball, softball and golf. 

He retired after 35 years of service from E.I. Dupont Company. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 07701 and a former member of the Masonic Lodge No. 92.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2025 at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston with Rev. Dr. Edwin Clever officiating.

 The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
