Charlotte Duncan Faris went to her home on high on January 1, 2025. She was born in Waynesboro, VA, on December 15, 1946, to the late Mae Shepherd Duncan and Leslie Burgess Duncan.
Charlotte graduated from Nelson County High School in 1965. She was a dedicated student with a special aptitude for language arts; among many honors, she was a participant in the National Spelling Bee, and she graduated near the top of her class. Charlotte was also a talented musician, and she played piano and organ and sang in her church choir throughout her life. After marrying Melvin in 1967, the couple and their sons eventually settled in Afton, just across the road from Charlotte’s home place.
Charlotte was a devoted wife, mother, and attendant of Rodes United Methodist Church. She was kind, loving, and empathetic to family, friends, and all in the community, and she took joy in others’ successes and sadness in their hardships. She was generous in spirit and always found a complimentary word for those she met. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her, and her family mourns the loss of their sweet Charlotte.
In addition to her parents, Burgess and Mae Duncan, she was preceded in death by her sister, Helen Duncan Fields (Jim) of Fishersville.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin Randolf Faris; brother, James Leslie Duncan (Nancy) of Mechanicsville; brother-in-law, Bobby Wayne Faris (Dottie) of Afton; sons, Marc Faris (Leslie Vincent) of Ithaca, NY, and Neil Faris (Teresa) of Albuquerque, NM; granddaughter, Silver Vincent-Faris; and nieces, nephews, and friends beyond number.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Rodes United Methodist Church, 286 Avon Road, Afton, with Rev. Scott Robertson-Gouge officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charlotte’s name to Rodes United Methodist Church, to the Hebron Baptist Church Bethlehem Project, and/or to the charity of your choice.
