Bruce Fredrick Lowery Jr. 72, of Charlottesville, passed away on July 5, 2024, after a long and valiant battle with heart failure, liver cancer and CKD.
Bruce was born in Suffolk to his birth parents who preceded him in death, Cecil Gautier and Willie Shaw. At the age of 3 he was adopted by Bruce and Maude Lowery who also proceeded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara Turner Lowery and their son, Jonathan Bruce Lowery and his wife Ashley. He and his wife were high school sweethearts and were the 1,000 couple to be married by the late Dr. Spurgeon Paschall former pastor of Belmont Baptist Church where Bruce had been an active member until his death, serving as a deacon and offering his help as long as he was able. After the birth of his son, Bruce began a quest to learn more about his life story and why he was placed for adoption. He was able to locate the birth mother and father and was graciously welcomed into their respective lives.
Bruce built a hunting cabin in Nelson County in the 90's which he dearly loved. His friends referred to it as the Hilton on the Hill. He was planning on moving to the farm but his illness progressed more rapidly than expected. He was able to visit the farm often and thoroughly enjoyed everything that rural Nelson had to offer.
After high school, he joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam era. He owned and operated a small diner in the old Better Living Building downtown in the 80's known as Bruce's Kitchen where he met many friends. Bruce retired from Grand Home Furnishings in 2011 due to his declining health. He was very proud of his 20 year career in sales and had many loyal customers who kept up with him after his retirement.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 13, 2024 at 11 am at the Belmont Baptist Church, 705 Belmont Ave, Charlottesville Virginia with Reverend Dr. Greg Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at Monticello Memorial Gardens with military rights accorded by VFW Post 1827 of Charlottesville.
Arrangements by the Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel of Lovingston (434-263-4097).
