Barbara O'Brien Carter

Barbara O’Brien Carter, 60, of Gladstone passed away on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

She was born January 2, 1963 in Lynchburg, Virginia to the late Ernest Trevillian O’Brien and Dorothy Jeanette Elliott O’Brien.

Barbara worked in the Nelson County School System for many years where she was best known as “Mama Carter”.  Recently, she found her true calling as a Housing Specialist with the Nelson County Community Development Foundation where she took pride in helping people find a home.  She was always willing to go above and beyond for everyone; she always put others before herself.

“Momma”, “Nanny”,” Nan” loved to cook; she truly took great pride in Sunday dinners with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Donald W. “Don” Carter; her children, Candice L. “Candy” Boor and her husband, Travis of Lovingston, Carrie A. Carter and her fiancé, Terry Taylor of Buckingham and Shane T. Carter and his wife, Rebecca of Indiana; A very special sister, Jean Carter and her husband, M.D. of Gladstone, sisters, Arlene Mays and her husband, Carlyle of Amherst and Darlene Peters of Gladstone; a special aunt, Shirley O’Brien of Gladstone; a mother-in-law, Carrie Carter of Arrington and her greatest blessings in life, “her babies”, Myles, Wesley, Tyler, Ava, Bryn, Gavin, and Eliza.

The family will receive friends from 2:00p.m. - 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at the Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston, VA.  A Graveside Service will follow at the Bethel Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Arrington with Pastor Jeff Worley Officiating.
